Mariachi Veritas de Harvard was started in 2001 by Claudia Garcia ’05. We are comprised entirely of Harvard students and are the first 100% student mariachi on the East Coast, in addition to being one of the few active mariachis in the Boston and Cambridge area.

The group is truly unique both as a student music organization and as a mariachi. The vast majority of our members have had little to no exposure to mariachi music prior to joining, and the group relies on handing down techniques learned by each generation of members in order to progress year after year. Many of our members have extremely strong backgrounds in classical and jazz performance, and the group is held together by top-level musicians who are progressively becoming more and more comfortable with the world of mariachi music.  Even with no faculty oversight or formal training, Mariachi Veritas is held together by its members’ passion for musicianship, culture, and camaraderie brought about by mariachi music.

We have played numerous shows over the past several years, including for celebrities and notable figures such as President of Mexico Felipe Calderon, former President of Mexico Vicente Fox, George Lopez, Salma Hayek, and Governor of Massachusetts Deval Patrick, among others. In December 2007, Mariachi Veritas de Harvard won third place in the University Group Competition level at the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza in San Antonio, Texas.

In addition to giving lively performances, Mariachi Veritas strives to spread mariachi music to those who are not familiar with it. Since many of our members had never heard of mariachi music prior to joining the group, its diverse background makes Mariachi Veritas the ideal candidate to bridge the gap between the world of mariachi music and people who have never had exposure to the music.  We look forward to seeing you at our next performance!

¡Viva!
